Melvindale-Dearborn fire merger becomes reality

June 20, 2013: The merger between the Melvindale and Dearborn fire departments is official. The Melvindale City Council voted 3-2 with one absent Wednesday to approve the merger. Dearborn’s council had voted 5-0 with one abstaining and one absent June 11 to approve the plan, in which all five stations in the two cities will remain open and all 128 firefighters in the two departments would keep their jobs in the new department. Saginaw fire union offers concessions to save nine positions; tentative deal awaits approval by members

June 18, 2013: Saginaw City Council has approved a tentative agreement with the city's firefighters union that could prevent nine of the 15 layoffs that would otherwise take effect July 1, the first day of the city's 2013-2014 budget year. Read more:
