June 20, 2013: The merger between the Melvindale and Dearborn fire departments is official. The Melvindale City Council voted 3-2 with one absent Wednesday to approve the merger. Dearborn’s council had voted 5-0 with one abstaining and one absent June 11 to approve the plan, in which all five stations in the two cities will remain open and all 128 firefighters in the two departments would keep their jobs in the new department.
