In recent months, the Jackson Fire Department has brought back two laid off firefighters, promoted a captain, and lost a 35-year veteran.

Six Plymouth Township firefighters will be losing their jobs because voters in that community rejected a special assessment millage. Township trustees voted Thursday evening to enact the layoffs.

The International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1410 took the full two weeks, down to the hour that Mayor William Matakas gave them to consider wage and benefit concessions. The deadline for concessions was the close of business Feb. 28.

Officials in Plymouth Township are expected to vote tonight to lay off six of its 21 firefighters. The move comes two days after 84 percent of voters rejected a special assessment proposal that would have levied up to 10 mills to fund the Plymouth Township Fire Department.

Organizers of the effort to repeal Michigan's controversial emergency manager law say they have collected more than 218,000 signatures from residents who would like to see the issue on the November ballot.

Voters in Redford Township rejected two ballot proposals that would have added police and firefighters and improved parks and recreation services.

Funding proposals had mixed results in Metro Detroit on Tuesday, as voters in three communities rejected measures to fund public safety while others approved plans to sustain police and fire or general operations.

The cash-strapped city has been ordered by Wayne County Circuit Judge John Gillis to hire more firefighters.

The relationship between the Port Huron and Marysville fire departments received a blessing Monday night from Port Huron City Council.
