Firefighters ratified a “brutal” tentative agreement that goes to the City Commission tonight for approval. The 54 members of the Professional Firefighters Local 431 overwhelming accepted a 2.5 percent wage cut, paying 20 percent of their health care premium – they didn’t pay any of it previously – and increased pension contributions among other changes.

Discussions are under way to have Westland Fire Chief Michael Reddy serve as top administrator for both the Westland and Wayne fire departments as a cost-saving measure.

There's seldom a good time to be away from home and family. But for St. Joseph firefighter Wilton "Butch" Terry, who is on his way to his fifth deployment with the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves since 2000, it's the life he has chosen.

In recent months, the Jackson Fire Department has brought back two laid off firefighters, promoted a captain, and lost a 35-year veteran.

Six Plymouth Township firefighters will be losing their jobs because voters in that community rejected a special assessment millage. Township trustees voted Thursday evening to enact the layoffs.

The International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1410 took the full two weeks, down to the hour that Mayor William Matakas gave them to consider wage and benefit concessions. The deadline for concessions was the close of business Feb. 28.

Officials in Plymouth Township are expected to vote tonight to lay off six of its 21 firefighters. The move comes two days after 84 percent of voters rejected a special assessment proposal that would have levied up to 10 mills to fund the Plymouth Township Fire Department.

Organizers of the effort to repeal Michigan's controversial emergency manager law say they have collected more than 218,000 signatures from residents who would like to see the issue on the November ballot.

Voters in Redford Township rejected two ballot proposals that would have added police and firefighters and improved parks and recreation services.
