Bay City commissioners continue to look at whether to combine police and fire into a public safety operation and discussed it at their meeting Monday night.
It's no secret the Saginaw Fire Department is shrinking, cut almost 50 percent compared to 10 years ago. But city leaders insist the cuts will not have an impact on public safety.
The Southfield City Council accepted a $2 million federal grant to help enhance the existing fire department last Monday. The grant will cover the cost of four new firefighters including salaries, benefits, equipment and continued training for two years with no cost to the city.
