The Delegato-McColl Scholarship Program was approved by the delegates at the 52nd Biennial Convention in Dearborn and was created for active members of the Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to become union leaders at the state, local, and international level. The scholarships are intended to educate less experienced union members to prevent knowledge gaps at the state and local level created by the departure of many of our distinguished union leaders. These members have demonstrated involvement in their local union and a desire to develop the foundation required to grow as an organized labor leader. Each of these applicants wrote an essay about what they feel are the major challenges facing the professional union fire fighter in Michigan today, and what are the solutions to the challenges.

The program was designed to pay $750 for two recipients per year, beginning in the Fall of 2016.  Because there wasn’t enough time to complete the application process in time to provide two awards in 2016, it was decided to provide four awards for 2017.  After reviewing the six applications and essays, it was decided to award scholarships to all six of the applicants.  Upon notifying WSU of the winners, it was discovered that the tuition costs had been increased to $1500 for the program.   The Labor Studies Center has graciously agreed to award another $750 scholarship to each of these applicants.
