Health Care Under Attack Again!
Nov 04, 2016

November 4, 2016

Brothers and Sisters,

I wanted to send everyone a quick legislative update.  While we are stilling hearing discussions on pension reforms, we are also now hearing that the Governor and legislature would like to eliminate retiree health care for all public employees, current and future.  It was only a few year ago that the GASB accounting standards changed and required that municipalities carry their retiree health care liabilities on their books. Now, they are using that unfunded liability as the catalyst for this change.   We are hearing that they want to take care of this in the upcoming lame duck session.

We have not seen anything specific yet but are working with the Governor’s office to get more details.  And like I said before, a lot will depend on this election.  Elections do matter, so please support our endorsed candidate list and of course VOTE!

If you talk to your legislator, please let them know that your retire health care coverage is very important to you and your family.  Any reforms considered, need to be achieved in a well thought out manner with input from all affected groups.  This is NOT something that can be taken care of during a two-week Lame Duck session of the legislature.  These are local issues that are dealt with on a local level.  Every community is different and a state wide “broad brush” approach will not work.

Your MPFFU will continue to be engaged in every discussion on these issues and will continue to fight for the benefits our members deserve!!

I will keep the updates coming as we have them and always remember, Our strength is in our unity!!
