Things You Should Know
Sep 23, 2016
Recent legislation dealing with our 1st Amendment Rights to free speech has renewed debate about what we may or may not be able to say as public employees. Certainly when we are engaged in union activity we do have some protections, all though it seems less and less every year.
In order to receive those protections we must be acting on behalf of the union / local, in other words you are not representing the department in any fashion. You should not be in uniform. Always express who you are representing and your title in the organization. Your business card should be union cards not department eg; Lt John Smith Great Lakes Fire Department, it should be John Smith, President, Great Lakes Professional Fire Fighters Union, IAFF L1313. In my travels among locals I have been handed many department cards and had individuals introduce themselves by their rank and name. Our rank is something to be proud of but it represents your status in the department not the union.
These small changes can help prevent a lot of headaches in the long run. I have attached a document that covers the basics when it comes to your rights of free speech as a governmental employee,  it may surprise you. As always do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Stay safe.
