Suicide Awareness Part 2
Oct 26, 2015

Firefighters never hesitate to protect each other while on scene. We always have each others' backs-even if it puts our own safety at risk.

But what if we suspect that our colleague is threatening his/her own life? Would we be as vigilant? Will you have the courage to act boldly?

This can be a hard but necessary conversation. It can literally save a life. Do not be afraid to ask you co-worker if they are thinking about suicide. It is a misconception that starting this conversation will trigger a suicide, as if by mentioning it will trigger suicidal action. But actually the exact opposite is true...talking about it will reduce the chance of suicidal action. Here is an acronym to offer guidance-AID LIFE.

A-Ask. Don't be afraid to ask about suicide.
I-Intervene immediately. Listen to the person and assure them that they are not alone.
D-Don't keep it a secret.
L-Locate help. Seek out a professional or a peer support person.
I-Involve command. Supervisors can help access to care.
F-Find someone to stay with the person.
E-Expedite. Get help now.

Suicide needs to be taken seriously. Firefighters are at a higher risk than the general population. But suicide is preventable.
